COMMISSION LAUNCHES NEW CALLS WORTH OVER €600 MILLION TO SUPPORT RESEARCH AND INNOVATION UNDER EU MISSIONS

Following the adoption of the Horizon Europe 2023-2024 work programme

This investment is expected to result in, for example, better preparing local and regional authorities to face climate-related risks, optimising minimally-invasive diagnostic cancer interventions, restoring at least 25 000 km of free-flowing rivers, providing Climate City Contracts with 100 cities, and and rolling out of the Soil Mission living labs.

EU Mission: Adaptation to Climate Change

The Mission on Adaptation to Climate Changesupports EU regions, cities and local authorities in building resilience against the impacts of climate change. It aims to accompany by 2030 at least 150 European regions and communities towards climate resilience.

Three new calls for proposals under this Mission have been opened for submission on 10 January 2023 with a total budget of €83 million. They will close on 20 September 2023.

EU Mission: Cancer

The Mission on Cancer aims to help beat cancer through better understanding of cancer, prevention, diagnostic & quality of life .

Four new calls for proposals under this Mission were  opened for submission on 12 January 2023 with a budget over €110.7 million. They will close on 12 April 2023.

EU Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters

The Mission ‘Restore our ocean and waters by 2030’ provides a systemic approach for the restoration, protection and preservation of our ocean, seas and waters by 2023.

Eleven new calls for proposals under this Mission have been opened for submission on 17 January 2023 with a total budget over  €87.7 million. In addition, two joint calls with other missions with a total budget of 31 million were launched: OCEAN-SOIL and CLIMA-OCEAN-SOIL. They will close on 20 September 2023.

EU Mission: Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities

The Cities Mission aims to deliver 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030 and to ensure that these cities act as experimentation to enable all European cities to follow suit by 2050.

One new call for proposals with two topics under this Mission have been opened for submission on 10 January 2023 with a total indicative budget of €70 million. It will close on 27 April 2023.

A call to associate Ukrainian cities to the Climate-neutral and smart cities Mission with a total indicative budget of €5 million is expected to open on 4 April 2023 and to close on 6 September 2023.

EU Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe

The Mission 'A Soil Deal for Europe' aims to establish 100 living labs and lighthouses to lead the transition towards healthy soils by 2030.

Nine new calls for proposals under this Mission have been opened for submission on 17 January 2023 with a total budget of €126 million. They will close on 20 September 2023.

Joint calls

new joint call for proposals between the Cities Mission and the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change has been opened for submission on 10 January 2023 with a total budget of €40 million. It will close on 27 April 2023.

new joint call for proposals between the Mission Climate Adaptation, the Mission Ocean and the Mission Soil has been opened for submission on 17 January 2023 with a total budget of €15 million. It will close on 20 September 2023.

new Joint call for proposals between Mission Ocean and Waters and Mission A Soil Deal for Europe has opened for submission on 17 January to find a joint approaches and solutions to address nutrient pollution in the landscape-river-sea system in the Mediterranean sea basin.

EU Missions info days

The EU Missions info days took place on 17-18 January 2023 with the aim of informing potential applicants about the new topics included in the EU Missions work programme 2023.

Background

EU Missions are a novelty of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme for the years 2021-2027. They aim to bring concrete solutions to some of our greatest challenges by 2030, by putting research and innovation into a new role, combining it with new forms of governance and engagement with citizens.
