ENHANCE RESEARCH VISIBILITY WITH ORCID ID

2023-11-22

The ORCID iD serves as an internationally recognized identification number that establishes a connection between researchers and their research outputs. It offers a unique association with publications, datasets, and software, providing a consistent link regardless of name variations, changes, or institutional affiliations. Additionally, the ORCID iD can be linked to repositories like the UZH Repository ZORA.

Obtaining an ORCID iD: To acquire an ORCID iD, register at https://orcid.org/register using a personal or professional email address. The registration and management of the ORCID iD are personal and cannot be delegated. It can be utilized throughout one's career, with the flexibility to deactivate or reactivate as needed. ORCID iD holders have complete control over the data displayed in their ORCID Record.

Adding Entries to ORCID Record: Entries, such as publications and datasets, can be added automatically or manually to ORCID Records. Importing entries is facilitated via Crossref, DataCite, Scopus, and other search and linking assistants, utilizing the ORCID iD for authorship and a persistent identifier like DOI. Manual additions or adjustments are also possible, covering information about employment, education, academic activities, and funding.

Advantages of ORCID iD:

  • Unique attribution of authorship
  • Improved overview of research output
  • Enhanced networking in the scientific publishing world
  • Simplified data exchange between systems

ORCID is a non-profit organization globally supported by numerous research institutions and publishers. Increasingly, publishers and research funders, including SNF, are requiring an ORCID iD.

ORCID iD at UZH: While UZH doesn't mandate ORCID iD usage, it is recommended in its Open Science Policy. Researchers can seamlessly record publications in ZORA, the institutional repository, using their ORCID iD. ZORA integrates the ORCID iD, allowing direct import/export of publications between ORCID and ZORA.

Import from ORCID to ZORA:

  1. In "Manage deposits," select "Orcid Import" as the import source.
  2. Choose publications to import from the ORCID record via "Search."

Export from ZORA to ORCID:

  1. Navigate to the "My publications / Export" tab in the ORCID menu of ZORA.
  2. Click "Search" and select publications for export.

While automatic synchronization between ORCID and ZORA isn't available, users can manually manage their linked publications.

Data from ZORA indicates a rise in ORCID iD usage over recent years, reflecting its increasing adoption and integration into research workflows.
