The political agreement, called the Windsor Framework, is not related to science, but it effectively breaks a 2-year diplomatic deadlock that stood in the way of finalizing separate arrangements with Horizon Europe, the European Union’s giant research funding program.

Most people will learn one or two languages in their lives. But Vaughn Smith, a 47-year-old carpet cleaner from Washington, D.C., speaks 24. Smith is a hyperpolyglot—a rare individual who speaks more than 10 languages.

In a new brain imaging study, researchers peered inside the minds of polyglots like Smith to tease out how language-specific regions in their brains respond to hearing different languages. Familiar languages elicited a stronger reaction than unfamiliar ones, they found, with one important exception: native languages, which provoked relatively little brain activity. This, the authors note, suggests there’s something special about the languages we learn early in life.

When Twitter announced on 2 February that the social media platform would end free access to its application programming interface (API) in a week, meaning tomorrow, a clock began ticking for Jean-Philippe Cointet. Like other researchers interested in topics such as political polarization or how misinformation spreads, the social scientist at Sciences Po uses the API to freely gather data on the hundreds of millions of tweets sent daily. If Twitter tries to charge a significant price for such information, some of his projects will not be possible. “When we got the news last week, we started to rush on a few data collection projects,” he says.

While in the womb, fingerprint-defining ridges expand outward in waves starting from three different points on each fingertip. The raised skin arises in a striped pattern thanks to interactions between three molecules that follow what’s known as a Turing pattern, researchers report February 9 in Cell. How those ridges spread from their starting sites — and merge — determines the overarching fingerprint shape.

3D PRINTING BEING DEVELOPED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TARTU WILL HELP TREAT DISEASES BETTER IN THE FUTURE

The 3D printing technology of drugs is being developed at the Institute of Pharmacy of the University of Tartu. The purpose of that is to better prevent, diagnose and treat diseases.

Kristjan Olado, a junior lecturer in pharmaceutical technology at the University of Tartu, said that the production technologies used in the pharmaceutical industry, such as tableting, are not intended for the creation of small-scale personalized drug batches. Therefore, one of the goals of pharmaceutical scientists is to introduce new, more flexible production methods.

One possible new method is three-dimensional or 3D printing of tablets. 3D printing started in the 1980s and has also been used in cardiology, dentistry, plastic surgery and bioprinting. In recent years, 3D printing has also entered the medical field. "The computer-designed model is built layer by layer into the desired object. Depending on how the layer is added, 3D printing is divided into different methods. In 2015, Spritam, the first 3D printed drug, was approved for sale."

TALLINN HOME TO EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH WILDLIFE NUMBERS

According to the results of a recent study, Tallinn's green areas are home to several hundred foxes, deer and hares as well as up to 50 moose. What makes the Estonian capital unique in Europe is that Tallinn is also home to beavers, and even lynx and bears passing through can be found in the city.

Commissioned by the City of Tallinn, Elusloodus OÜ studied the city's 20 biggest green areas, where they registered the presence of 20 species of mammal. Over the course of the five-year study, some 1,500 mammals in all were registered in the capital.

ESTONIA TO HAVE TWO NEW RESEARCH CENTRES

Two international research consortia, led by the University of Tartu, received €30 million from the European Commission for the development of two research centres in Estonia over the next six years; the Estonian government will also donate €30 million.

One of the centres deals with the digitalisation of synthetic biology and the other with personalised medicine. Besides research excellence, the centres will boost the development of digitalised bioindustry and start-ups working on data-based health services, according to the university.

DARIAH launches annual open access monograph scholarship for emerging digital humanities researchers
DARIAH-EU is launching an annual open access book scholarship for the publication of a first monograph in the digital humanities. The fellowship will fund the open access publication of one monograph (or other voluminous form of scholarship) per year.
The fellowship aims to support honest, community-driven players, and therefore publication in a DOAB-certified, honest open access publication venue with transparent pricing and in accordance with SPARC best practice principles with science communication services is set as the Absolute Eligibility Criterion.
The competition is open to novice researchers wishing to publish their first open access monograph.
The author's DARIAH affiliation or funding statement must be clearly identified in the publication, preferably even as part of the metadata.
The publication costs will be covered up to a maximum of 7000 euros (including VAT). In exceptional cases and with sufficient justification, an extension of a maximum of 500 euros is possible (e.g. CC-BY license surcharge).

Open access book collection for UG and UMCG authors
The University of Groningen has introduced an open access book fund. Authors affiliated with UG and UMCG can apply for funding to publish their monograph or edited volume.
The fund will run through August 2023. Continued operation of the fund after August 2023 is contingent on renewed funding from UG/UMCG.
The maximum reimbursement amount is €8,000 (including VAT) per book.
The author(s) and/or editor(s) must be affiliated with UG or UMCG.
Ideally, publishers should meet the basic requirements established by the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB). In addition to meeting DOAB criteria, publishers are (strongly) encouraged to assign a DOI to a publication and post it to the OAPEN-Library to improve its discoverability. The University Library will verify compliance with these criteria. If the requirements cannot be fully met, authors are encouraged to contact the University Library to discuss publisher eligibility.

Unfunded monograph authors from any university department may enter the Library's Open Access (OA) monograph competition if they publish a monograph soon or publish on or after October 1, 2021, including eligible works from last year's competition.

Winners will receive funding from the Library to create their monographs in the public domain. The Library makes arrangements directly with the winners' publishers.
Send a paragraph of no more than 300 words explaining why your research would benefit from open access publication to uml.openaccess@manchester.ac.uk by February 24, 2023. Please include your publisher and the anticipated or actual publication date.
We especially welcome submissions from authors publishing in fully open access book publishers.
