REVOLUTIONIZING HIGHER EDUCATION: NAVIGATING THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN E-TEXTBOOKS AND LEARNING

2023-12-04

The landscape of higher education is undergoing a transformation, and e-textbooks play a crucial role in shaping the future of learning, teaching, and assessment. However, the existing pricing models are not only expensive but also outdated, creating barriers to equitable access for students across various institutions.

Licensing restrictions and rights management pose additional challenges for higher education institutes (HEIs) and users alike. The lack of diversity in e-textbooks further hinders the pursuit of a more inclusive and varied curriculum by institutions.

While open access is gaining ground, many institutions still find it challenging to prioritize it amidst competing demands on their workloads and resources. The consequence is a limitation in the choices available, hindering the evolution of teaching, learning, and assessment practices.

The Potential of Artificial Intelligence as a Game Changer

Artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a potential game-changer in this scenario. By personalizing the learning journey and leveraging AI to curate content (with proper intellectual property considerations), institutions can offer a service that meets students' expectations. This approach transforms traditional textbooks into a customizable array of relevant content, fostering distinctive features and individuality.

AI's ability to deliver personalized content opens avenues for a deeper understanding of student engagement. Rich analytics could uncover unique learning paths, enriching the student experience and enabling sophisticated support mechanisms that were previously challenging to achieve.

Choosing Between Immediate Improvements and Long-Term Transformation

The critical question arises: should efforts be focused on making existing models more affordable and equitable, or should institutions invest in technology that could revolutionize teaching, learning, and assessment in the long run? While the latter may be considered the "long game," it presents an appealing prospect for the future.

Setting Priorities for Licensed Solutions

In response to the strategic challenges faced by institutions, priorities have been outlined by the Learning Content Expert Group and Content Negotiation Strategy Group. These priorities include solutions for simulated and experiential learning, employability and skills, and personalized learning. Jisc commits to collaboration with sector partners, prioritizing these solutions over negotiating e-textbook agreements directly.

Addressing Challenges and Fostering Collaboration

Recent years have seen sector partners such as SUPC, APUC, SCONUL, RLUK, and Jisc taking collective action in response to challenges posed by publishers. Joint efforts, including letters to publishers and exploring new models, demonstrate a commitment to addressing disruptions in the e-textbook landscape.

Looking Ahead: Transparency and Accountability

Jisc, in collaboration with SUPC, aims to establish mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability in existing and future e-textbook frameworks. By engaging suppliers and organizations, the goal is to create a system that considers the sector's requirements through contractual arrangements, fostering the digital transformation of learning, teaching, and assessment across all learning content. The Learning Content Expert Group and Jisc invite universities and colleges to join hands in shaping the future of digital education.
