NOTICE OF CONCERN REGARDING SIMULTANEOUS PUBLICATION

2024-02-28

A recent case of simultaneous publication involving two closely related papers, Paper X in Journal A and Paper Y in Journal B, has raised concerns regarding ethical research conduct. Despite apparent differences, both papers share significant overlap in results and key conclusions, leading to questions about the integrity of the research and publication process.

Although the authors of Paper X have asserted that the results were obtained separately, evidence suggests otherwise. Both papers have common co-corresponding authors, and reviewers and editorial board members have noted the striking similarities between them. Despite receiving an explanation from the authors, the Editor of Journal B, upon reviewing the matter, deemed the explanation satisfactory.

In line with COPE's advice, Journal A has decided to publish a notice of concern regarding this case. While the investigation conducted by the authors' institution included external expertise and internal review, Journal A remains concerned about the implications of simultaneous publication and the integrity of the research involved.

It is crucial for the scientific community to uphold rigorous ethical standards in research and publication. Journal A emphasizes the importance of transparency, proper attribution, and avoiding duplication in scholarly work. While punitive measures are not encouraged, awareness and adherence to best practices are essential for maintaining the credibility and trustworthiness of academic research.

Moving forward, Journal A urges authors to exercise diligence and integrity in their research endeavors and encourages open dialogue to address any concerns regarding publication ethics.
