CLARIVATE ENHANCES WEB OF SCIENCE WITH PREPRINT CITATION INDEX™ FOR STREAMLINED RESEARCH WORKFLOWS

2023-12-28

Clarivate Plc has announced the integration of the Preprint Citation Index™ into its Web of Science™ platform. This addition allows researchers to easily discover and link to preprints within the database, streamlining the research process and facilitating faster and more meaningful connections.

In academic publishing, a preprint refers to a version of a research paper or outcome made publicly available in online repositories before undergoing peer review. The incorporation of preprints into the Web of Science offers researchers swift access to these preliminary research outputs, allowing seamless integration into their existing workflows. The platform provides immediate access to nearly two million preprints from repositories such as arXiv, bioRxiv, chemRxiv, medRxiv, and Preprints.org, with plans to add papers from additional repositories in 2023.

Key features of the Preprint Citation Index include:

  1. Discoverability: Preprint records are integrated into the Web of Science alongside other scholarly content, enhancing their visibility and accessibility to researchers.

  2. Linking to Final Versions: The index enables users to connect preprints to final versions of record, where applicable, facilitating the tracking of research development from preprint to peer-reviewed publication.

  3. Researcher Profiles: Preprints are displayed on researchers' Web of Science profiles, providing a comprehensive view of their work and expertise throughout their careers.

  4. Citation Linking: Researchers can explore connections between preprints in the index and journal articles indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection through citation linking.

  5. Monitoring Research Updates: Users can set alerts for keywords or specific researchers of interest to receive notifications when relevant preprints become available.

It's important to note that preprints included in the Preprint Citation Index are clearly identified in search results and are excluded from citation metrics, including Times Cited Counts or the Journal Impact Factor™ (JIF), within the Web of Science Core Collection™ or Journal Citation Reports™.

This enhancement aligns with Clarivate's commitment to providing comprehensive and efficient research tools, offering researchers a consolidated platform to access both preprints and peer-reviewed articles seamlessly.
