ACADEMIC INTEGRITY BREACHED: UNCOVERING PLAGIARISM AND MISCONDUCT IN PUBLISHED PAPERS

2024-05-30

In a shocking revelation, a recently published paper has been exposed as a verbatim copy of another work by a different author. This unsettling discovery unfolded through the vigilant efforts of a meticulous reviewer during the initial stages of the review process.

The editorial team stumbled upon two cases of possible misconduct involving the same author(s). The first instance came to light when a diligent reviewer noticed striking similarities between the "copied" paper and a previously published article from another journal. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the author had replicated an entire paper that had been published in their journal a year earlier.

Compounding the issue, one of the reviewers who accepted the original paper turned out to be the author of the plagiarized work. The editorial team promptly informed the authors of these revelations, requesting an explanation, an apology, or retraction. In a bold move, they also warned of potential involvement of the University President due to the unethical nature of the actions.

Despite the senior author withdrawing the paper under review, attempts to contact the university president were unsuccessful. Undeterred, the editorial team escalated the matter by reaching out to the Ambassador of the implicated individual's country. Regrettably, no response was received, even after a reminder.

In a bid to curb further misconduct, the first published paper was retracted, and the guilty authors were publicly named. The editorial team proactively alerted 6–7 journals in the relevant field, cautioning them against accepting any submissions from the implicated individual or their group.

Seeking guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the editor faced challenges when responses from the involved parties were not forthcoming. Suggestions were made to leverage COPE involvement in communication, explore potential reviewer misconduct, file complaints with relevant societies or associations, and consider an anonymous editorial addressing the issue.

This distressing incident underscores the importance of upholding academic integrity and serves as a stark reminder that such misconduct will not be tolerated within the scientific community.
